wiiw and Bertelsmann Stiftung will provide an insight into EU’s economic ties with the Western Balkans by presenting a new study and discuss, together with a distinguished panel of diplomats and experts, a new EU approach towards the region.

LSEE-CEFTA Paper Competition

The Prof.Dr.Marijan Hanžeković Trust announces its competition for the award of the annual prize for 2021. Papers, in Croatian or in English, must be submitted by June 1, 2021 at the latest. New study by Bertelsmann Stiftung & wiiw evaluates regional economic cooperation in the Western Balkans for two decades

20 years of trying to drive political reconciliation via regional economic integration in the Western Balkans has produced disappointing results. New forms of differentiated integration with the EU provide a more promising route to increase economic development. A more decisive step forward in regional integration and the eventual admission of the six Western Balkan countries into the EU will require Brussels to tackle much more directly the major constitutional and territorial disputes in the region.

Against the background of the current COVID-19 crisis, the OeNB’s 86th East Jour Fixe will discuss the macroeconomic situation in the Western Balkans as well as related macrofinancial stability issues. Renowned speakers will share their views on current stability challenges in the region. In particular, the workshop will address the European integration process, euroization and local currency strategies, developments in nonperforming loans as well as macrofinancial risks arising from the crisis.

The candidate should be interested in labour markets, migration and income distribution and Central, East and Southeast Europe (CESEE)

Major Tasks:

Widen our expertise on labour markets, migration and income distribution
Acquisition and execution of research projects
Research on the CESEE economies and country monitoring

The position is limited to 18 months in the first instance, but can be extended following a satisfactory probationary period. Start: as soon as possible – ideally by August 2020.

Requirements:

MA or PhD in Economics
Research experience in labour-/migration-/inequality- and macro-economics
Interest in applied research
Good quantitative and econometric skills
Knowledge of both conventional and heterodox economic analyses
Excellent English (written and oral); knowledge of a CEESE language as well as German is an advantage
Very good (proposal) writing and presentation skills
Flexibility as well as ability to work in teams

We pay salaries comparable to universities. Remuneration for the full-time position (i.e. 40 hours per week) will be € 40,000 gross annual income or above, depending on qualification. Women are encouraged to apply.

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Institute of Public Finance (IJF) and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung are organising the conference Public Sector Economics (PES) 2020 – The State and Perspectives of Pension Reforms.The goal is to take stock of the current state of pension systems around the world and provide a state-of-the-art assessment of the need and room for future reforms in a world of profound demographic, labour market, political and technological changes. The deadline for abstracts is May 31, 2020.

8th NBRM Research Conference

The 8th NBRM Research Conference is jointly organised by the National Bank of the Republic of North Macedonia and the European Investment Bank. The conference aims to bring together researchers from central banks, academia and policy-making institutions. The Conference will focus on discussing the impact on emerging markets and the appropriate policy mix to address the changing environment. The Conference will highlight the issue of access to finance for the private sector, given its importance for emerging economies, in an uncertain context in particular. It will encompass two high-level policy-oriented panel discussions by distinguished guest speakers from international institutions, central banks and academic institutions. In addition, there will be several sessions booked for presentations of research papers.
